Instagram can be a weird, scary and sometimes downright invasive place. Take @thawracrushesofficial, for example. The account, translating to "Revolution Crushes," encourages people to take pictures of protesters in Lebanon, post them to the social media account and ask strangers to help them identify the person.
Think Cinderella, only super intrusive, very public and honestly, encouraging some terrifying behaviour. The account basically goads people into stalking others whose images have been used without their permission on the public forum. The perfect example of how a "romantic" concept can turn creepy real quick.
There is no law in Lebanon against the photographing of people without their permission, however there is in the UAE, in which Article 378 of the UAE Penal Code (Federal Law No. 3 of 1987) states that taking a person's photo without his/her consent is an invasion of privacy, and thus punishable by law. And, considering trends like this, it's possibly something more countries should implement.
The account features over 30 pictures of unsuspecting people who have been photographed during protests simply because they are considered attractive. Although the submitter of the photo may have honourable intentions, the use of a public forum means those who don't have such noble intentions have access to the photos. This begs the question, though, if you're protesting for your country and the rights of your people, why exactly are you thinking about your love life?
