Most of us keep finding the same obstacles in our lives, where there’s something we just can’t seem to get a handle on, whether it’s repeatedly struggling to remember our many, many online passwords, or always stumbling over the same tool in Photoshop. While we can’t help you with your passwords or finding out how to stop buying those extra 20 items of random stuff when you go out for a loaf of bread, we can help you with Photoshop. So our big feature this month answers questions that you, our readers, sent to us in your quest to get to know Photoshop’s many features better. And hopefully, those answers will help when it comes to the many and varied tutorials that follow, along with our insightful interviews and expert reviews. We hope you enjoy the issue.

trending images

Check out some of the most popular artwork that’s been rocking the internet over the last few weeks, and take inspiration from what’s currently trending There’s nothing more inspiring than surfing the internet and seeing what other artists are creating, and we encourage you to do so. Here are some of our favourite pictures that caught our attention recently, from some of the world’s most exciting artists and designers.

Danny is a celebrated 3D artist online, featured by SVA Portfolios and Wacom. This is a particularly beautiful piece, and shows that Photoshop can help play a part in even the most complex of work.

Weston Fuller

www.westonfuller.com/

Plastic Bag is a conceptual composite where collected beach trash was added as ‘jelly fish’ in Photoshop using blend modes and adjustment layers, to create an emotional connection between the subject matter.

A poignant piece that was awarded with Behance’s Photography badge, Weston’s work is meticulously put together with a great concept. It’s worth checking out the series; the project as a whole has been viewed over 20,000 times.

Danny Ivan

www. dannyivan. com/

This was created from my research and development about light and how materials react with each other. I made it with Cinema 4D, X-Particles and Photoshop CC, which helped create the motion blur.

Dawid Planeta

www.behance.net/dawidplaneta

There was a feeling that I really wanted to depict in this image. I collected elements and combined them to create this composition. Then I worked with Levels to tweak this image and to create a sense of depth.

8

Dawid’s created a strong identity in his artwork, and has garnered over 6,000 followers on Instagram. We love the colourless, moody atmosphere in his artwork, and this one is particularly haunting.

Steve has been featured by Behance 11 times, and this is one of our favourite pieces he’s created. Not only is it really imaginative, the lighting and shade is beautiful; a great feat considering Steve’s “as flat as possible” goal.

Steve Scott

stevescott.com.au

This image was created for an Indian tyre company. The idea was to show a journey through Ladakh. I wanted to keep the image as flat as possible, so no textures and a very simple, basic, clean brush. It was a nice restriction to have.

Mikeila Borgia

www.mikeilaborgia.com/

This was one of a series of photos that I made on the streets of New York, shot with a Canon Mark III with a 50mm 1.4 lens. They were edited in Photoshop, where the neon colours were really brought to the fore.

This is a really pretty example of geometric illustration. Valentyn specialises in these vibrant, modern pieces, and with 200,000 views online, his work has reached a huge audience. From the colouring around individual strands of hair to the focus on the subject, this is an expertly executed and edited photo; Mikeila is a Lightroom-showcased photographer online and this is a stunning example of her work.

Valentyn Khenkin

www.behance. net/Valutka

This was a concept for a media application for music lovers. To give the illustrations life and vibrancy, I used geometric colours, shapes and gradients in Photoshop and Illustrator.

Estelle Chomienne

photoshopcreative.co.uk/user/ Stellart

This was my entry for a competition called #ChallengeYourPerspective online. I duplicated the image several times to create a new landscape and had great fun with brushes painting hair and make up.

Raqee S Najmuldeen

photoshopcreative.co.uk/user/Abulrook

This image is simply made of two different pictures; a cage and a sky. The birds are made from brushes. I played with blend modes to show texture and create a dramatic feeling in the image.

Andre van Graan

photo shopcreative. co.uk/user/Andrevg1

I blended the model into a new background and used a couple of adjustment layers. I repaired her one eye that was a bit smudgy in the original and finished off with a bokeh effect.

10

Murilo Francisco Mumu0909

photoshop creative. co.uk/user/

I started with the image of the trees and the rocks and focused it all with the wolf in the foreground. A lot of work was done on the blue tones of the picture, [which helped to unite] all the elements in one coherent composition.

Jarek Rzechowski photoshopcreative.co.uk/ user/Jarek%20Rzechowski

I enjoy creating photomontages, especially those of a realistic nature. This very piece of work was based on a real element of my home city, Szczecin in Poland. I had to mask and match colour in this composition to bring it together.

Mehdi MostefaiĚˆ mmmprod

photoshop creative. co.uk/user/

This was a very simple image to create. I focused on light painting, as I wanted to work on volume, soft and hard light, and work with the model to enhance the look on her face.

Interview

Impact “This has a double meaning; partly the impact of the environment, of what we do as well as the physical impact of something, so I wanted to play with this. Even though this guy looks quite surprised and doesn’t expect this to happen, he’s still somehow the cause of it; he broke through it, somehow like ice. Bad luck was something I thought about too, with the broken mirrors. I hope I don’t get that bad luck though! So far, so good.”

Surrealer than fiction From photographing his family to fine art, we speak to Erik Johansson about his incredible journey and his favourite Photoshop tools

I

haven’t been to the event before, so I’m excited to come,” says Erik Johansson, ahead of March’s The Photography Show, held at the NEC in Birmingham, UK. “Usually if I come someplace new, I try and travel around a bit, see if maybe I can even make something around there.” Let’s hope he gets the chance, because special things happen when Erik explores a landscape with his camera. His work often blends surreal photography with social or economic commentary; sometimes it’s hard-hitting, and other times it’s downright silly. Whatever the impact, he’s found his way into galleries and museums, and soon Erik will be penning a book about this work. For someone who centres his work in the surreal, it’s also a fitting way to describe Erik’s progression from messing around in Photoshop to entering the fine-art world.

12

Endless Reflections

We gave Erik a call between assignments in his native Sweden, to talk to him about places, pictures and perfectionism, ahead of his talk at The Photography Show.

Your work is centred in location – where have your favourite places to shoot been? I think most of the material in my work comes from Sweden. I think that’s mostly
