These roads will be closed from Friday to prevent cut-through traffic in Helpman

Groningen – Operation Ring Zuid will enter a new phase from Friday evening. After the west side, the east side of Julianaplein will now be closed for months. To prevent many motorists from looking for shortcuts through Helpman, a number of roads will also be opened here.

The connection to and from Drachten with Julianaplein was closed last month. That will change in possible weeks. From Friday evening, almost the entire Julianaplein will be completely closed for a week.

Only the direction of travel from Drachten to Assen remains usable. After the May holidays, Julianaplein will open again, but this time only for traffic from the A28 from Assen in the direction of the A7 to Drachten and vice versa.

With the change, there is a good chance that cut-through traffic will also move to the southeastern neighborhoods of the city. That is why a number of roads will be closed here from Friday.

Helper zoom closed

For example, the Helperzoom under the viaduct of the southern ring road will be closed from Friday morning. This conclusion applies to all traffic in both directions, to and from Waterloolaan. A temporary road is therefore being constructed from the Helperzoom to the Hereweg via the Kempkensberg. There is a temporary cycle path in both directions for cyclists during this period.

Car traffic can drive on the road in one direction: from Helperzoom to Hereweg. Car traffic to, for example, the DUO building can detour via the Verlengde Hereweg and the Goeman Borgesiuslaan. The closure will last until the autumn of 2024.

Do not turn left to Helperzoom from Helperzoomtunnel

Traffic can also no longer turn left directly from the Helperzoom tunnel to the Helperzoom. In this way, the municipality tries to prevent traffic from finding its own route via the southern part of Helpman. All traffic is directed to the right, heading north. Due to this closure, traffic cannot drive across the entire Helperzoom from north to south. This is to prevent Goeman Borgesiuslaan and De Savornin Lohmanlaan from becoming busy during this period. This measure lasts until September 2.
