Elephant Breeding Center (EBC) was established in 1985 at Royal Chitwan National Park (RCNP). This is the only EBC in Nepal. Twenty elephants have been placed at EBC for breeding purposes. Nineteen calves have been reproduced at EBC and survival rate was found to be 59.6 percent.

How many babies can an elephant have at once? Unlike other animals, elephants usually only have one baby at a time. However, there are cases where elephants can have twins, but this only happens in one per cent of elephant births. This is only slightly smaller compared to humans, where 1.6 per cent of births are twins.

In captive elephants, the infant mortality rate is a shocking 40%. Captive facilities keep breeding elephants despite the deaths, and continue to breed by any means. At Louisville Zoo, Mikki had a baby Scotty, following one of several pregnancies forced upon her through AI.

Females are reproductively receptive for about three weeks, but conception is only possible three to five days of that time. Reproductive receptiveness is often displayed in females by greater interest and enthusiasm at the approach of a musth bull and/or exhibit an estrous walk.
