First trailer for Pixar’s new movie Onward imagines elves in a modern fantasy world

Chris Pratt and Tom Holland reunite

Onward, the latest film from Pixar Animation Studios, takes place in a “suburban fantasy world,” where elves use cell phones, unicorns are pesky raccoon-like creatures, and wise, magical trees grow in the middle of parking lots. The first trailer gives us a proper glimpse of this fantasy land, where machines have replaced magic.

Starring Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, Onward follows a pair of elf brothers on a quest to see if there’s any magic left in the world, so that they can spend one more day with their father. Holland plays the shier younger brother Ian, with Pratt as the boisterous older sibling Barley.

Thanks to the two actors’ previous collaboration in the Marvel movies, they enjoyed an easy chemistry and recorded some scenes together.

“They are clearly friends,” director and writer Dan Scanlon told People. “They’ve worked together before and hung out together. It was fun to sit back and watch them make each other laugh.”

Co-starring alongside Holland and Pratt are Julia Louis-Dreyfus, as the boys’ mom, and Octavia Spencer, in an unknown role.

Onward comes out on March 6.
