You don't want to give your significant other yet another reason to yell at you while you're reading XDA in bed. Rate this thread to express what you think of the Nokia 7 Plus's display minimum dimness. A higher rating indicates that the display can get extremely dim, ideal for reading in very dark environments.

Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Goes Pretty dim, but (Personally) still too bright while in full darkness. (But hey, There's native nightlight mode. Yay!) (4 Stars)

There is an issue with some of the Nokia 7+ phones.

Some displays will not dim any more from 16% down to 1% (stays the same).
The phones not having this problem the display info says: 07
The with this problem says: novatek-v07

Also the display is a bit more yellow-ish

What @albino71 says is correct. I've found this out the hard way sadly. I noticed my screen was very bright in darkness. It was so bright i would prefer to wear sunglasses, or just wouldn't use it in bed....
Luckily i have a collegue with the same mobile phone and i've compared mine with his.

Minimum brightness (left is mine):

As you can see, the difference is staggering. During daytime it's not a problem, but at night...

Maximum brightness (top is mine):
full.jpg

The difference is less noticable here, but there is some small difference in colour.

While further inspecting the phone, there was just 1 difference visible in the setting. Touchpanel firmware version. Mine was "Novatek-V07" and his was "07".

So apparently, they have different suppliers for some parts. That's nothing new for phone builders. Yet this time, they made a mistake.

I've sent my phone out for repairs. And after a mainboard-swap it was returned to me. My brightness issues are fixed now. My Touchpanel firmware version is now also "07".

Minimum brightness, left is mine, after repairs:

Notice that also the colour difference is gone.

Buying this phone is a lottery now. Just hope you get a winning ticket ;)

Is there a way to actually know what type of LCD is used, that information is just firmware version and it can be just a place or anything in that name Novotel,I want to find out what is the exact hardware model type ,like on mi phones you can check in self test or other brands, firmware versions can be misleading, mine is as per firmware 07 version and it is pretty bright at night even if it goes down to 4%

Even in complete darkness the automatic mode does not dim the display completely down. I can pull it down manually, but that's not a good solution.

Sadly, there is no update about this issue. Android Pie doesn't fix it. Perhaps in a later update, nobody knows. :(

Some small updates, we have been comparing phones in the Netherlands.

For now, it seems that all novatek-v07 phones have this issue while others do not. We have also noticed that phones with the novatek firmware will respond differently to adaptive brightness depending on the light. If the phone is set to 0% brightness with adaptive brightness turned OFF, the light sensor is covered and adaptive brightness is turned ON - the novatek screens will jump to 16% brightness while the "07" (non-novatek presumably) variant stays at 0%.

I'm trying to push the issue with Nokia Support, but so far I'm getting the standard reply: "reset the device or send it back to us for repairs" :/

This is on Android 8.1.0 - updating to 9.0 as I'm writing this to find out if anything changes. Will update.

*update*

On Android 9.0 (V3.22C) adaptive brightness will keep the phone at 0%, however the screen still does not get any darker physically under 16% brightness.

Another phone with the Novatek display and the brightness/green tint issue here. SKU ends with A09. Black version.

The worst thing is that I previously had a non-novatek phone (a white one), but had it replaced due to damage, and the new one has this issue. This feels like a huge downgrade, so I'm considering returning the phone.
The display just looks plain ugly now.

To be honest, i don't think this will ever be fixed. On the dutch forum tweakers.net people have tried to have it repaired, like i did. But they get the phone back without being fixed. It's deemed "normal"...
I think Nokia has instructed their repair partners to not repair this issue. Nokia isn't owning up to their responsabilities. So this was my first modern Nokia phone and also my last. Right now, my phone is sent away for repairement of the USB-C connecter which is loose. Also a common problem apparently...

I'm seriously let down by this phone and i'm considering buying the Huawei Mate 20 lite after selling the Nokia 7 plus second handed.
