Petra

Petra

Petra is a rural, traditional town at the center of Mallorca. Petra in Latin means “rock” and it is known for its sandstone which has created many of the villages of Mallorca. Petra has many historic places, beautifil buildings and fields with traditional crops: melons, almond trees, olive trees and cereals. Petra is still untouched by tourism, what is very rare in Mallorca. Petra is home to a population of 2,787 residents, almost all of them are locals.

17th century was a gold age for Petra. It was one of the most important towns on the island, with a large population. The area was the main crop yielding region of the island, but various epidemics affected the agricultural productivity of the area. This costed a dramatic decrease in population.

Petra is also the home to a number of vineyards that produce high quality wines. These wines are very well known in Mallorca. Vineyards has very good agricultural conditions with warm summer climate. These wines can be tryed all over Mallorca, but for sure the best place for their enjoyment is in Petra itself. Petra is a perfect place for those who prefer relaxed and quiet setting, love history and want to run away from busy holiday resorts.
