1. He began his career as a journalist.

If George Clooney had continued to follow in the steps of his father, journalist and TV personality Nick Clooney, there’s a good chance he would never have become the actor we know him as today. He also wanted to become a professional baseball player, but despite qualifying for the Cincinnati Reds, Clooney was never recruited.

2. He wasn’t always the actor we know him to be

Gravity, in which he plays alongside Sandra Bullock, Ocean’s Eleven, A Night in Hell, Money Monster, Good Night and Good LuckGeorge Clooney has acted in many films that have become known to film-buffs as essential. Yet and still, the 58-year-old actor made his quiet debut with a series of roles in parody films. The biggest standout? The Return of the Killer Tomatoes… A 1988 film about a mad scientist who develops a process that turns tomatoes in to killers. George Clooney plays the role of Matt, a naïve pizza-chef who has to help his uncle save the world from the deadly tomatoes. It’s ultimately his role as the sexy doctor Doug Ross in the series ER that propels him in to fame.

3. His activism has gotten him arrested

Over the years, George Clooney has shown a pension for activism and political involvement. In 2001 he used his notoriety to raise funds for victims of the 9/11 attacks, and in 2006 he joined forces with Barack Obama to denounce the Sudanese military’s actions during the dramatic civil conflicts in Darfur. Two years later, the actor was dubbed a Messenger of Peace by the United Nations. Clooney also decided to donate 1 million dollars for rebuilding efforts and to help victims after the earthquake that destroyed much of Haiti in 2010. Most significantly, Clooney was arrested alongside his father, when in 2012 they protested against the government of Khartoum outside of the Sudanese embassy in Washington.

4. He is a close friend of the British royal family

On the guestlist for the royal wedding between Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in May of 2018, was George Clooney and his wife Amal Clooney. The couple made quite the impression upon their arrival at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor. A longtime friend of the royal family’s notorious troublemaker, it’s rumored that the Clooneys were subsequently invited as guests of Prince Harry to his 18th century villa Oleandra located near Lake Como.

5. He has a multifaceted personality

While George Clooney is most known as one of the best actors of all time, evident through the several awards he’s received (Oscar for best supporting actor, golden globe for best supporting actor in Syriana, golden globe for best actor for The Descendants…) he is also an influential director with no less than seven films and series’ to his credit. He’s currently in charge of a new miniseries based off of Joseph Heller’s 1961 novel “Catch-22”, which depicts the story of Captain John Yossarian as he navigates the U.S airforce during World War II. Of noteworthy mention – George Clooney was People magazine’s “sexiest man in the world” for 1997.
