The Olsen twins have been influencing fashion trends since their days as teen actors, and since the launch of their label, The Row, in 2006, they’ve become synonymous with a luxurious kind of minimalism. For more than a decade, the twins have perfected this look, though every so often one of them switches gears. Free-spirited Mary Kate has always gravitated towards pieces with a rock ’n’ roll vibe, but she went full-on ’90s grunge yesterday in the Hamptons. Out for her morning coffee run, the designer layered a red plaid button-down from God’s True Cashmere over a white tank and navy lounge pants. Looking like she stepped out of a Pearl Jam video, Olsen sported flip flops and an array of gold beaded necklaces and (naturally) two giant caffeinated beverages.

Of course, any Olsen take on grunge has to include a little glamour, and the God’s True Cashmere flannel added just the right amount. From afar, it may seem ordinary, though the 100% cashmere piece is anything but. Created by holistic healer and Amrit Jewelry founder, Sat Hari Khalsa, the God’s True Cashmere label is made in Italy out of handwoven tartan fabric created by generational weavers. Khalsa’s yoga training and spiritual beliefs strongly influence the designs; the shirts feature buttons made of hand-cut gemstones arranged to stimulate healing, 11 throughout to symbolize the number of mastery in numerology and seven on the front of representing each of the body’s chakras.

It's the kind of stealth wealth fashion that you have to be in the know even to get ahold of—the line is only stocked at buzzy Los Angeles boutique, Just One Eye. In that sense, the shirt represents the most opulent form of “grunge” imaginable. Already gaining traction with celebrities (Brad Pitt is rumored to be the brand’s silent partner), God’s True Cashmere aligns with 2020’s vision of luxury. Expensive runway pieces and look-at-me styles may still seem inappropriate, and yet somehow gemstone laced loungewear inexplicably hits the mark. As the woman who helped to popularize dressed up Birkenstocks, Bobo layers, and the Starbucks cup as an accessory, Olsen may be onto something.
