The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute has extended the run of its latest exhibit, "China: Through the Looking Glass," until Labor Day, giving fashion fans an opportunity to see the ways in which Eastern art and culture has inspired some of the world’s most renowned designers in recent history. Reworking these ideas for a classic all-black New York working wardrobe was designer Mary-Kate Olsen, who was spotted out in SoHo yesterday.

All pretty silk embroidery aside, there are elements of her look that go beyond a basic urban uniform—note the flattering (and ventilating) side slit on her tailored flared pants, for example. They’re the kind of trousers that work well with a chic slide at street level or a towering stiletto heel for cocktail hour at a rooftop soiree.
