ALL ABOUT PIGS

10 Fast Facts about PIGS

Pigs are highly intelligent and curious! They are believed to be the smartest animals on the farm, brighter than most dogs and some primates.

1.

Pigs are super-duper clean animals. If they are given enough space to live, they will not soil where they eat or sleep.

2.

No sweat! Pigs do not have sweat glands like we do, so they like to roll around in the mud or loll around in the water to cool off.

3.

No slow pokes here! Adult domestic pigs can run as fast as 11 miles per hour, while their wild boar counterparts (being a bit sleeker) run faster at 15mph!

4.

Pigs are big talkers. They keep in constant communication by grunting with their young and pen-mates.

5.

What about that adorable nose? What pigs lack in eyesight, they make up for with their keen sense of smell. They use their sensitive, leathery nose to "root" or search for food in the dirt. Their sense of smell is 2000 times more intense than ours!

6.

Pigs are quite social and like to snuggle. They find comfort and warmth from getting all cozy with other pigs, especially at bedtime.

7.

And speaking of sleep---pigs need their beauty rest! Depending on the season, they may sleep up to 12 hours a day.

8.

Pigs do not love the heat and can get sunburned. At the sanctuary, we provide canopies, sprinklers, and sunscreen for our pig residents!

9.

Estimates put the number of pigs in the world today around 2 billion. Sadly, most of these beautiful animals are raised for food. If left to live to a ripe old age, pigs could live to be 15-20 years old!
