Bill Nighy interview: My nickname used to be ‘Nervous’

He’s 73 and up for a Bafta and an Oscar after decades of grappling with self-doubt

Bill Nighy thinks about death at least 12 times a day. Actually, he confesses, that’s a lower-end estimate. The thought can strike at any time, even when he’s buying shoes: “This might be my last pair . . .” But Nighy believes this has little to do with age. He is 73 and has always been morbidly obsessed. “I don’t think I could think about death any more than I already do,” he says. “But I’m not running from it.”

And what happens after death? Nighy was raised Catholic and listened for a calling from God. But the voice did not come and he lost his religion as a teenager. He doesn’t think it’ll come back. “I worked very hard to not be a Catholic,”
