Musician and model Pia Mia is used to getting creative with clothing. “Growing up in Guam, there weren’t a lot of places to shop so I would take pieces from my family and cut them up and tie them to make them my own,” explains the 19-year-old. “I’ve always had a very different style because of that.”

If her 3.9 million followers on Instagram are any indication, people like different. Whether sharing her cool Coachella getups (camouflage pants were the star) or showing off her elevated take on grunge, Pia somehow manages to remain on trend while also serving up a healthy dose of individuality.

Who better, then, to serve as the first ever fashion director of Material Girl — a brand that is all about celebrating bold individuals? “I feel so honored to have been given the role — I’ve been wearing the label since I was 14 so being able to be involved with it directly is dope for me,” enthuses Pia of her new appointment. “I’m really excited to be able to throw my ideas out there and have my hand in the design process.”

Although she won’t be influencing the aesthetic of the fall 2016 clothing (it hits Macy’s stores this summer), Pia was heavily involved in the execution of the season’s recently shot campaign. “I picked the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo as the shoot location and selected Solmaz Saberi to photograph it,” says the creative. “I also helped with the styling, it was very hands-on.”

The spring 2017 collection is where you’ll really get to see Pia’s sartorial guns come out, as she will be advising on everything from the silhouettes of the garments to their patterns. “I want to bring some dope flannels, cute halter crop tops, and more form-fitting crop tops to the line,” she says. “I think I can really bring a lot of ideas to the table and come up with cool pieces.”

With a debut album also in the works (look out for a new single soon!), Pia is well on her way to total #GirlBoss status. “For me, music and fashion go hand in hand,” she says. “They are the two ways that I express myself best.”
