At this point, the story of The Notebook is a tried-and-true romantic movie/sob-fest. The Nicholas Sparks novel-turned-film has charmed audiences for years, with a story that has also been adapted for Broadway. But in the U.K., some fans have noticed that The Notebook, when viewed on Netflix, includes a major change to the the film's ending. Yes, the very ending that we all know, love, and have cried over since 2004.

There are spoilers ahead, so quit reading now if you haven't watched the film. Digital Spy reported that social media is unhappy with the Netflix U.K. version's reworked final scene. In the original, the film ended with a scene at a nursing home; the two main characters, Allie (Rachel McAdams) and Noah (Ryan Gosling), are much older, and Allie — who has dementia — has recalled the time she spent with Noah when they were young. The pair end the film in a romantic embrace, dying with each other.

In the Netflix U.K. version, the couple lay in bed together at the end, but it's unclear what happens next, because, as Digital Spy reports, the scene flashes to flying birds. One fan explained what happened in a tweet, writing, "the alternate one just cuts off when noah and allie are holding hands in the bed and fades to black i rlly can’t understand why it’s weird."

The change left some viewers upset, including this one, who tweeted, "I'm not big into romantic movies but I have seen #thenotebook and @netflix what you did wasnt ok that ending was beautiful it's all I can ever hope for in my marriage so when I finally eat dirt I can go with the one I love dont you dare take that away!" Another Twitter user agreed, saying, "Its shocking....! Give us back our gut wrenching tears!!!!!!"

Despite the change, some have defended the decision, saying, "They just cut out the bit where the nurse finds them...they still died in each other’s arms, it’s still implied ??" And another fan noted that this version is true to the book, writing, "The alternate ending of The Notebook is more similar to that of the ACTUAL book, and there’s a sequel so it’s def prepping us for the sequel."

Netflix U.K. addressed the ending change on Twitter, writing, "Things you should know… – we did not edit the notebook – an alternate version exists and was supplied to us – we are getting to the bottom of it asap – apparently some films have more than one ending?!"

It's unclear what ending will be included when the film comes to U.S. Netflix on March 1, but you may want to keep the tissues close, just in case.
