Futurliner Becomes World’s Most Expensive Car Hauler

futurliner-car-hauler-1In 1940, GM built a dozen massive buses they dubbed Futurliners as part of the so-called Parade of Progress, showcasing the many technological advancements made by American engineers. Though the Parade was halted in 1941 by the outbreak of World War II, GM resumed the travelling expo in 1953 and ran it all the way through 1956, after which the 11 surviving Futurliners were sold or forgotten.

futurliner-car-hauler-4Nine are known to still exist, and one of them, No. 5, was recently given a totally unique and unexpected overhaul that transformed it from a bus into a car hauler. Hemmings Auto Blog reports that this massive car hauler has gone up for grabs with an asking price of $1.25 million, making it an investment capable of hauling nearly all of your investments.

Of course it’s so much more than a simple car hauler; this GM Futurliner is a part of histpry, albeit one that was almost scrapped entirely. Owned and built by Brad Boyajian, who owns and is restoring two other Futurliners, No. 5 came into his possession as part of a deal that saw another Futurliner restoration group take off all the parts they needed in exchange for delivering the remnants to Brad.

All that left him with was a functional rear axle and most of the rear section, along with the cab and a little bit of extra sheet metal. Rather than just scrap it or try to sell off the remains though, Brad came up with a clever solution that saw the Futurliner get some serious hauling hardware, including 20,000 pound air-sprung axles, a 200-gallon fuel tank, and a 12,500 watt Onan generator.

With seating for four and air conditioning, Brad has already managed to haul an 8,800 pound bus with relative ease thanks to a Cummins 6BT diesel engine mated to an Allison five-speed manual transmission. To make getting at the bigger-than-original engine easier, Brad created a non-stock tilt-cab. It’s just about the classiest car hauler out there, and almost certainly the most expensive, and it’s indisputably the coolest.
