The Batman director reveals the new Batmobile

Bruce Wayne has a new Batsuit, a new Batbike, and now a new Batmobile for director Matt Reeves’ upcoming take on the Caped Crusader. Reeves posted our first look at the new Batmobile from next year’s The Batman on Twitter today, and it’s a mean-looking machine.

Unlike previous on-screen Batmobiles, which have ranged from the futuristic concept car of the 1960s TV series to the stylized Art Deco turbine-powered car from Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) to the urban military look from Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, Reeves’ version looks simply like a beefed up muscle car. It is, perhaps, the most grounded and straightforward of the live-action Batmobiles, and it looks great.

The most remarkable thing about it — since it’s not drenched in bat imagery — is its monstrous engine, which appears to take up about half of the new Batmobile’s overall size.

The first photos of The Batman’s Batmobile also offer another peek at Robert Pattinson in the new Batsuit. They’re grainy and dark — certainly not as revealing as those set photos of Batman on a motorcycle — but deliver the vibe that Reeves is clearly aiming for with the 2021 Batman reboot.

The Batman is a “noir-driven” original story, according to Reeves, who also directed Cloverfield, Let Me In, and War for the Planet of the Apes. The movie stars Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as The Penguin, and Paul Dano as The Riddler.
