Backstuga (Hill cottage)

A Backstuga (literally "hill cottage" in English) is a small cottage built into the southern slope of a hill. It was the home of many people from the landless class during the early 17th to the early 20th century in southern Sweden. People living in these cottages had no land to farm and usually had to rely on many different types of work to support themselves, e.g. some craftmanship, doing manual work for farmers, begging.
