How much of Forgetting Sarah Marshall is true?

Segel told an audience that the cringe-worthy breakup scene that opens Forgetting Sarah Marshall (in which his character is dumped while he's in the nude) happened to him "exactly as it was portrayed in the movie." He was waiting for his girlfriend to return from a trip and expected a reconciliation. Instead, she initiated a split, leading a crestfallen Segel to think: "This is going to be so funny in a movie."

“I can honestly say that at the age I was when I wrote that movie, 24 or 25 years old, getting over a bad break-up was the most vital, visceral and real pain I had experienced,” Segel told Little White Lies. “It was the biggest thing I’d gone through at that age and I think watching somebody scramble through new emotions in their life is what makes it funny. That’s what relationships are,” he reasons, “a series of failures until you find the one that works—but that first one just feels monumental.”

So while the Sarah Marshall character herself is fictional, the film's awkward hilarity was apparently inspired by Segel's real-life heartbreak.
