Muse’s Matt Bellamy says ‘feeling alone’ has been a dominant theme in his life

The singer reveals that 'walks in the countryside' helped him get over Kate Hudson break-up rather than songwriting

Muse frontman Matt Bellamy discusses his high-profile split from actress Kate Hudson in this week’s issue of NME, stating that it didn’t influence the songwriting of his band’s new album.

Bellamy and Hudson began dating in 2010 before getting engaged and having a child a year later. They announced their split in December 2014. Speaking to NME in this week’s issue, available digitally and on newsstands now, Bellamy revealed that the pair remain close.

“We had a great relationship, she’s a lovely person, we’re better off as friends,” Bellamy said. “It’s difficult for me to pinpoint anything on the album specifically about [the break-up]… Except that when someone suddenly finds themselves outside of a relationship, they ponder things, they think over the points in their lives when they think things didn’t go the way they expected them to… It’s the fact that I reconnected with all the points in my life where I felt alone or outside.”

Bellamy added, “When I think about my teenage years, when my parents broke up, and feeling alone and being out of control and having to survive… And then other times when you’ve had to find your own way… that’s always been a dominant theme.”

The singer revealed that long walks helped as a form of therapy, rather than songwriting. “I always go for walks in the countryside. The South Devon countryside… I used to go letter-boxing actually,” he said. Bellamy also revealed that he’s found more peace in his personal life recently. He confirmed: “Definitely in the last few months I’ve been feeling much better. Actually, I’ve been feeling really good.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Bellamy also described visiting the White House and talking conspiracy theories with former Secretary Of State Colin Powell.
