Tom Cruise made a surprise appearance during SAG-AFTRA's negotiating session with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, emphasizing the importance of addressing the guild's concerns regarding AI and stunt professionals. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Cruise used the platform to urge the AMPTP to listen to SAG-AFTRA's position on these matters.

Cruise's involvement extended beyond the AI issue, as he also expressed support for SAG-AFTRA's stance on stunt performers. The actor shared his insights on the delicate state of movie theaters in the post-pandemic era, raising awareness among SAG-AFTRA representatives.

While SAG-AFTRA occasionally invites performers to participate in negotiations to discuss areas of their expertise, Cruise's presence carried significant weight. The guild recognized the value of his perspective, and it is worth noting that no other star of Cruise's caliber participated in this capacity during the negotiations.

SAG-AFTRA had presented proposals related to stunt professionals, including stunt coordinators and performers, who are represented by the 160,000-strong union. Additionally, they aimed to establish stricter guidelines regarding the use of generative AI in entertainment, with a focus on ensuring performer consent and fair compensation when their performances are incorporated into AI technology.

It was mission impossible for the superstar

Unfortunately, despite Cruise's involvement, the negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP did not result in a deal before the expiration of the union's film and television contracts package. This prompted performers to initiate picketing activities and withhold their work, leading to the disruption and delay of several productions, including Mission: Impossible 8.

In addition to addressing AI and stunt concerns, Cruise reportedly urged SAG-AFTRA to reconsider their current strike rules, specifically regarding actors' ability to promote films during a strike. Recognizing the delicate state of movie theaters, Cruise emphasized the importance of promotion for actors. However, this request stirred discomfort among some present during the discussions, as SAG-AFTRA's current strike rules strictly forbid publicity activities related to struck work or companies.

While the negotiations did not yield the desired outcome, Tom Cruise's involvement served as a reminder of the significance of the AI issue and the welfare of stunt professionals to SAG-AFTRA.
