THE ERIN HANSON OPEN IMPRESSIONISM NEWSLETTER

Welcome to the Erin Hanson Open Impressionism Newsletter!

I've created this newsletter to share my story and my art in an authentic and compelling manner while keeping my audience up to date on developments, upcoming events and overall news.

A behind the scenes, personal look into my life and art.

As we've launched into 2024 we have a massive and exciting year ahead! My schedule is quite literally booked fully in advance--not an open day left this year (no exaggeration).

So for those of you who are not yet familiar with myself or my art, it's lovely to meet you.

This is who I am and what I do:

“My goal is to capture the beauty of light during the golden hour and transform ordinary landscapes into extraordinary mosaics of color and texture. I apply oil paints in thick, expressive brushstrokes laid side-by-side, without blending, in the style I coined Open Impressionism. My goal for each painting is to capture a moment in time so beautiful it makes you catch your breath when you see it. I want my paintings to speak to you again and again, drawing you in, making you part of the impressionistic movement."

So...what is Open Impressionism?

Good question. Let's define the term. I think its well explained here:

Open Impressionism uses color to create emotion, thick oil paint strokes to create movement, and separated brushwork to create a stained glass effect.

"Erin Hanson created the contemporary painting style "Open Impressionism," now taught in art schools and colleges worldwide. Open Impressionism blends classic impressionism and modern expressionism with a dash of plein air style. Erin Hanson has inspired thousands of artists to take up the brush and emulate her techniques of interpreting light and color.

Hanson spent the past twenty years developing the unique techniques of Open Impressionism, which involve minimal brush strokes and the impasto application of paint. Unlike traditional oil painters, Hanson does not build up the painting layer by layer; instead, she lays her paint strokes side by side without overlapping and works to get each stroke "right the first time." The distinct, separated brush strokes give her paintings a mosaic or stained-glass appearance, while also conveying a sense of movement and spontaneity. She uses a limited palette of only five pigments to create vivid, un-muddied colors that ignite the imagination.

Open Impressionism continues the work of impressionists and post-impressionists. Her style was inspired by Monet’s mastery of light and van Gogh’s intuitive sense of color. The purpose of each painting is to capture the fleeting and momentary light seen out of doors, especially during early dawn and sunset. Like other impressionist painters, Hanson's work appears more abstract when viewed up close and "goes into focus" when seen from a few feet away."

A bit about myself:

I absolutely love the outdoors, breathtaking landscapes and the use of natural light to capture this.

I love to climb and this is a true passion of mine!

I also love Porsche (had one for many years) and going FAAAASSSSTTT....!

I have a degree in bioengineering from UC Berkeley. Yup.

I've produced (and sold) over 3,000 original oil works.

I was not encouraged generally to succeed in the arts--yet I did. I am passionate about helping emerging painters succeed in their own right as artists and have dedicated thousands of hours to helping others along this line. Some of my resources for artists:
