"Atmospheric Forces": My Public Art Project Proposal to Depict a World War II Formation of One Thousand U.S. B-17 bombers.

The idea explores a critical and formative part of Seattle's and indeed the world's history. Boeing B-17 Bombers were designed and built in Seattle in the thousands between 1940 and 1945, and were deployed in gigantic, hugely destructive raids against the Axis powers in WWII. The scale of these raids almost escapes understanding.

This permanent public artwork will recreate a full formation of hundreds of models of Boeing B-17 bombers: a thousand scaled aircraft suspended against the sky by soaring structures formed from the engines’ contrails. An open air sculpture, observers would pass under what one witness to a WWII bombing described to me as a “a stream of hundreds of silver American aircraft, stretching from horizon to horizon against a clear deep blue sky, with the thunder of engines that came from all directions at once.”

I have casting models ready and am scouting for a small foundry and metal shop, experienced metal casting and welding artists, and interested historical and aviation history groups.

A full description is here.

Jamie...this sounds like a pretty interesting concept/project.
