Ulrica Hydman-Vallien

Ulrica Hydman Vallien, born in 1938 in Stockholm, Sweden, was a prominent glass artist and painter, recognized for her bold and vivid designs. As a child, she was immersed in a creative environment, which fueled her early interest in art. She pursued formal training at the University College of Arts, Crafts, and Design in Stockholm, where she developed her unique style of expressive, colorful, and energetic glasswork.

Known for her passion, Ulrica often said, "Desire, energy, passion – I can love and hate all at the same time. I’m both argumentative and totally committed. With glass, everything is possible. It’s immediate, intense, demanding; never is it just plain old glass. I use it to paint on and tell tales. I have no rules, and I allow my instinctive feelings to take me wherever they want." This spirit of creativity and energy is reflected in her vibrant works.

Ulrica Hydman Vallien gained international acclaim for her distinctive approach to glass art, characterized by striking and humorous designs. She often painted her imagery straight onto the glass, embracing a free and unrestrained energy. Her breakthrough collections, Caramba and Open Minds, as well as the later Tulipa range, showcased her artistic flair and sense of fun. Her work has been featured on various products, including mobile phones and even the tails of airplanes, a testament to her broad appeal and innovative vision.
