Great stories make you dream of incredible places. When you read the stories of explorers who circumnavigate the World from one pole to the other, passing between seas and glaciers and forests and mountains, you realise one thing seems to drive them – freedom.
This freedom is preserved at its best around the Arctic Circle (latitude 66) in Sweden. At the beginning of 2022, I heard about the Kungsleden, a route that winds through our planet’s vast boreal lands, for the first time. In turn, I convinced myself that I could belong to those who discover freedom there and tell its story.

The Kungsleden (King’s Path) leads 470 kilometres (292 mi) between Abisko (latitude 68) and Hemavan (latitude 65). This Swedish trail promises the discovery of a world made up of birch forests, immense lake networks, and an open tundra. In other words, it’s a hiker’s dream.

I did this adventure during summer and I suggest following the official route, starting from Abisko. To get there, you can take a night train from Stockholm. I highly recommend a spot in a sleeper cabin, although seats are also available. On the way back from Hemavan, you can take a bus to Umeå. It’s easier to travel to Stockholm from there.

From Abisko, it takes at least three weeks to complete the Kungsleden. The route is divided into two parts. Popular with locals, the first section is 100 kilometres (60 mi) between Abisko and Saltoluokta. You’ll find a refuge around every 15 kilometres (9 mi) and several places to get provisions. The southern part runs 300 kilometres (186 mi) from Saltoluokta to Hemavan and is much less frequented. It has fewer shelters and it’s harder to refuel.

Hiking around the Arctic Circle is a summer activity. At any other time of year, the weather is unpredictable and the sun is almost non-existent. However, if you ski tour, some parts of the Kungsleden are still possible to explore.

Pack a complete set of warm and waterproof clothes. In the middle of August, it can rain for several days in a row and the terrain can become extremely boggy. The nighttime temperatures can also drop below zero at high altitudes.

Don't forget that mosquitoes are a real problem during the summer. They’re not very dangerous, but they’ll drive you crazy. Wear long sleeves, avoid shorts, and get a mosquito net to wear over your cap.

There’s no shortage of accommodation along the Kungsleden. Both staffed and unstaffed refuges are regular, especially during the northern section. However, take your wild camping gear with you. According to the allemansrätten, Sweden’s right of free access to nature, everyone can wild camp wherever they want, as long as they stay away from residential areas and respect nature.

For supplies, stock up on food when you go to the huts or towns. At first glance, the trails are very different to an alpine itinerary. However, the terrain conditions combined with the weather, can make your adventure much more challenging.

For the paper map aficionados, the Swedish publisher Fjällkarten offers 1:100,000 references that are accurate enough for this trek. To complete the Kungsleden, you need the references BD6, BD8, BD10, BD14 and BD16.

Finally, keep in mind that Sweden is expensive. Around the Arctic Circle, access conditions are difficult. If you want to sleep in a refuge or travel light, plan on a substantial budget. If you buy your food in the grocery stores of the refuges, plan on at least €20 euros per day. If you sleep there, be aware that some refuges charge €100 per night.

Have a good walk!

During this fourth stage, I invite you to discover one of the most picturesque valleys of the Kungsleden. Among the homeless, opinions are often unanimous. The Tjäktja Valley elevates. It is an ode to beauty, if not to nature. In the heart of the valley, do not hesitate to make a few stops to get drunk
