Jonesville police say $10 bills converted to $100 bills

An advisory posted on the police department's Facebook page on Nov. 8 says, “Please use caution when exchanging $100 dollar bills. We’ve taken a report where a $10 bill has been transformed into a $100 bill."

The advisory says Jonesville police learned from surrounding law enforcement agencies that several of the altered bills have been passed out.

A representative of the Dollar General on N.C. 268 in Ronda reported to the Wilkes Sheriff’s Office that the store received one of these bogus $100 bills on Nov. 9. Deputy Landen Byrd reported that a photo of a suspect in this case was obtained from the store but the suspect hasn’t yet been identified.

It says these bogus bills pass the counterfeit detector pen test since they originally were legitimate $10 bills.

The advisory says that when one of the bogus $100 bills is held up to a light, the face seen at far right is the wrong face. It should be Benjamin Franklin's face, but instead it's Alexander Hamilton's. Also, the water mark should say $100 but it says $10.

The advisory says the scam will likely become more common as it gets closer to Christmas, so cash should be checked closely.
