JJ Lin Was Terrified in Confessing Love to Hebe Tien

Earlier this month, Singaporean singer JJ Lin (林俊傑) kicked off his 2013 “Time Line” World Tour at the Taipei Arena, where he publicly expressed his love for S.H.E member Hebe Tien (田馥甄). Although he has hinted at his admiration of Hebe more than once since his industry debut, the two have simply remained good friends. In a recent interview, JJ revealed some juicy background details about his confession of love and admitted that he had never been so afraid in his entire life.

On the day of the Taipei concert, special guest performer Jolin Tsai (蔡依林) egged JJ on to give Hebe some soy milk and deep-fried breadsticks, which is the name of one of the songs he performed. Amid approving screams from fans, JJ received an embrace from Hebe and even plucked up the courage to invite her to sit on the stage’s elevated swing with him, where he serenaded her with his song “Little Dimple” <小酒窩>.

Since the event, JJ has remained tight-lipped about his confession, insisting only that he and Hebe are “still good friends.” While being interviewed by Southern Metropolis Daily, however, JJ revealed that the confession had not been planned beforehand, though he did previously know that Hebe would be attending the concert.

“At the time, I actually felt very awkward and shy, because I had never done something like this before,” he shared. “I’ve never been so afraid in my entire life.”

According to JJ, the confession was instigated not only by Jolin, but also by other friends and fellow entertainers who were present at the concert. “Hebe was just sitting there [in the VIP area],” he explained, “and I thought I might as well give the soy milk to her, otherwise it wouldn’t be right if I gave it to anyone else. At the time, I just went along with my emotions and didn’t think too much about it.

“There was an empty seat next to her, and I was pulled over next to her. That seat was originally supposed to be Jolin’s, but she was still backstage and hadn’t come up yet. So at the time, I figured I might as well just sit there for a bit then.”

Although JJ has been a longtime admirer of Hebe, it was not until S.H.E held their comeback concert earlier this year that his feelings appeared to be reciprocated. During the girl group’s celebratory banquet, during which both Ella Chen (陳嘉樺) and Selina Ren’s (任家萱) husbands showed up, Hebe was asked if she felt frustrated for being the odd one out.

“No, I don’t,” replied Hebe, “because JJ Lin is also here.”

“To tell the truth,” JJ later shared, “it was because I heard her say this, that I had the courage that day to run out [and confess to her]. I wouldn’t have been able to do it otherwise.”
