The tights-instead-of-pants trend has been going strong for a few seasons now, but Kristen Stewart is championing the return of an alternative: knee-high stockings.
The short stockings fad is not new, but they are traditionally loved by private schoolgirls in checkered miniskirts, for their preppy coquettishness; and by burlesque dancers, for their freaky sexiness. The look is also reminiscent of softball uniforms, where exposed below-the-knee socks are a staple.
On Monday, for an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Stewart paired the undergarments with a stringy curtain top by Mônot and a black maxi skirt with a large slit at the back, which revealed the tights. She tucked them into black open-toe heels.
The actor’s shimmery top had a halter neck and an open back, where two ties held it together. She wore it with no bra underneath, showing some subtle sideboob.
The Twilight star finished the look with a black leather lunchbox bag by Chanel, a chunky silver chain necklace, and black sunglasses. She wore minimal, glowy makeup and had her hair up in a messy ponytail.
Stewart—who is promoting her new film Love Lies Bleeding—was also photographed leaving the show set after changing into a more casual look. She kept the short stockings, skirt, bag, and chain, but traded her flirty curtain top for a cropped white tee with a red “Camp Stewart” graphic (a Texas summer camp for boys, but clearly also a cheeky nod to her last name). She also exchanged her heels for a pair of low white sneakers and put on a black baseball hat and a black leather jacket.
