Description

Succisa pratensis

Height x Spread: 100cm x 50cm

Commonly known as the 'Devil's Bit Scabious', it bears lilac blue pincushion type flowers that gently bob and weave on wiry, branching stems above green oval-leaved rosettes. It is an ideal candidate for a wildlife garden too, as its flowers are veritable butterfly magnets.

This very naturalistic plant looks beautiful planted in drifts through a moist wild meadow or bog garden, but can tolerate drier soils too. Within a garden its airiness and grace lends itself to layered gardens, delivering a see-through screen of glowing blue dots in autumn, that draw the eye. This British native plant thrives in full sun in moist soils, also tolerating winter wet, but can cope with drier soils in partial shade.
