Jamie Dornan continues to enthrall us with his latest foray onto our screens, The Tourist, a BBC TV thriller series set in the Australian Outback. After the success of the The Fall – where Dornan played a brooding serial killer – the Fifty Shades actor is back for a doozy of a six-part drama.

Thriller fans, here is your next binge watch. It's got car chases, twists and turns and many mysteries to be solved. Perfect January fodder, sign us up for an escape Down Under.

Here's everything you need to know about The Tourist, which hit screens on New Year's Day.

What is The Tourist about?

The series follows a lost and bewildered British man who wakes up in hospital after a terrifying car chase in the middle of the Australian outback.

Remarkably, he survives a gas truck trying to run him off the road but he's been left with no recollection of who he is – and therefore why there are dangerous people pursuing him. The BBC synopsis has dubbed it “an epic cat-and-mouse chase”.

Seeing as The Tourist was written by the BAFTA-nominated and Emmy-winning producers and screenwriters responsible for The Missing – Harry and Jack Williams – we're expecting big things.

According to insiders at HBO Max, who will partner with the BBC to make the series, The Tourist will leave viewers "on the edge of their seats" as we piece together the backstory alongside Dornan's mysterious character.

Jamie himself said The Tourist scripts were "some of the most exciting [he'd] ever read" and accordingly, we have set our expectations very high.

Who will star in The Tourist?

It is a relief to hear that Dornan isn't playing the bad guy this time – at least, we don't think he will. Instead the Irish actor will play the lead character, known as The Man, sporting an impressive buzzcut.

Meanwhile Danielle Macdonald (who you remember from Netflix movie Dumplin') will play Helen Chambers, a fledgling probationary constable. You'll also recognise Line Of Duty’s Shalom Brune-Franklin as Luci, a waitress who finds herself unexpectedly swept up in Jamie's journey. You can also expect to see Hugo Weaving as Agent Lachlan Rogers.

What are people saying about The Tourist so far?

Fans have taken to Twitter calling the BBC thriller series “brilliant”, “the best thing Jamie Dornan has ever done” and “very Hitchcock” – all very tall compliments.

Another popular review has been a very positive one of Jamie’s arms – which are looking very good, if we do say so ourselves.

It also seems to be a prime candidate for a binge watch, for the January evenings (and days) where you just want to escape to another world. “It was worth staying up until 3am to binge watch The Tourist,” a fan tweeted. “Well done Jamie Dornan and the other actors, it was a top show, lots of twists and turns”.

One keen fan shared their thoughts: “#TheTourist ok I won't spoil but fml after all 6 eps my mind is like whatttt holy sh*t and still laughing. What a f*cking show . Unlike anything I've ever watched personally 10/10 #JamieDornan”.
