Types of Bromeliads including photos, tips and facts..

Are you curious to know which Bromeliad species there are? In this blog, I will introduce you to about four different Bromeliads, which are generally available year-round and do well in our living room. The Bromelia is a tropical plant, which can often be recognised by its strikingly coloured flower(s). To avoid confusion, Bromelia is an umbrella family name for the plants listed below. In trade, they are often simply called by their proper name, as shown in the photos below.

Origin of the Bromelia
Naturally, most Bromelia species occur in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. The Bromelia is a tropical plant that does well in an environment with high humidity. It is good to know that Bromeliads only flower once in their lifetime and then slowly die off. If you have been given a Bromeliad or would like to buy one, keep in mind that the flower(s) will give about 3 to 6 months of pleasure. Even if it doesn't have a flower then, the same goes for the Pineapple plant.

The most popular Bromelia species
Although the Bromelia family consists of a large number of species, here in the Netherlands we mainly know the Aechmea (Kokerbromelia), Guzmania, Vriesea and Pineapple plant. One species that is not pictured here, but should not be missing from this list, is the Tillandsia.
