A draw for adventure enthusiasts, the landscape of this remote national park is filled with glacial valleys, powerful rapids and alpine peaks.

Leave civilization behind and explore untouched wilderness in Sarek National Park. Part of the Laponian World Heritage Site, Sarek offers some of the best hiking in the country. With few trails and facilities, this rugged landscape is not for inexperienced hikers, but seasoned trekkers will be rewarded with glimpses of some of the country’s highest mountains as well as striking natural scenery.

See soaring mountain peaks reaching over 6,560 feet (2,000 meters) high and nearly 100 glaciers. Six of Sweden’s 13 highest mountains are found in Sarek National Park, contrasting against deep valleys and tumbling rapids. Look for brown bears, wolverine, lynx and huge moose in the Rapadalen Valley, as well as birds of prey like golden eagles and buzzards.

Hike in a group, travel with a wilderness guide or arrange to fly in by helicopter. Start your trek at the mountain station of Saltoluokta, which has a hotel and restaurant. The King's Trail (Kungsleden), which passes through the eastern part of the park, is Sarek’s one and only trail.

Find spectacular panoramic views at the summit of Mount Skierfe. Admire the clear waters of the Rapa River, which snakes through the pristine landscape. Hike the four peaks of Sweden’s second-highest mountain, Sarektjåkkå. If you time your visit accordingly, you may see the legendary northern lights.

Indigenous Sami people still live in small villages in Sarek and practice traditional ways of life. Look for their huts and try to spot shepherds herding groups of reindeer.

Reach Sarek National Park from the nearby town of Jokkmokk. Keep in mind that there are no tourist facilities or cabins, so bring a tent and everything you need for the journey. It’s best to check in with a Swedish Tourist Association lodge or national park office before beginning your trek. Late spring, summer and early autumn are the best times to visit, with freezing temperatures and short days from mid-autumn onward.

Enjoy challenging hikes and unspoiled natural scenery in this beautiful national park.
