Cravats of the mid-19th Century were made of fine silks, satin, taffeta and cottons. They were usually darker shades of green, blue, wine, brown and black. The fabric and color were dependent on the use of the cravat. Even clerks and office workers would wear a cravat, usually a cotton in a brown or black. Every gentleman needs a cravat/tie to "spruce up: for the balls and evening dances and to attend Sunday services.

The tie is long enough to tie in 3 ways:
A simple Bow: Worn for all types of occasions: day wear as well as evening. This is the most common style used.
Cascade Style: This is a very simple style and easy to tie and always looks neat. It should have a stick/cravat pin to keep it together and attach it to the shirt. The tails are usually tucked into the vest.
American Style: This is the more formal of the styles and has evolved into the modern cravat worn today. It should have a stick/cravat pin to keep the tails together.
