An authentic cube of Savon de Marseille. This soap is handcrafted in the French city of Marseille by Le Serail, one of the very few traditional soap company still remaining in activity in Marseille. We had the chance to visit the factory during one of our regular trip to Provence where we could truly appreciate the artisan production process.
The vast majority of soap called "Savon de Marseille" are not produced in Marseille, and a lot are made outside France. The Serail is a family owned business, which has been operating since 1949. It is the most traditional soap maker I found in the city. Each batch is mixed and cooked in large cauldrons while being under the watch of the soap master {Maitre Savonnier} and a Virgin Mary statue. All the equipments are also quite unique and old, and were made in Marseille specifically for the production of Savons de Marseille. The overall process including the curing phase can take up to 1 month, making each cube a true piece of French heritage
Because of its hypoallergenic and anti bacteria property, le Savon de Marseille is still been recommended by dermatologists in France for cleaning sensitive skin or shaving. These soaps are also so beautiful, they can just be left on a shelf as decoration. With time, they will dry out even more and develop an amazing patina. Perfect also for a gift.
300 gr White Cube - 2¾" (7 cm) cube - Coconut and Copra Oils
These soaps are made with a 72% mixture of coconut and copra oils. These are beige in color and as they are not milled, these soaps lose moisture and turn dark with time, however, this aging process does not affect the soap's cleansing abilities. They are also free from added perfume. They are recommended for household use, such as laundry or washing dishes, but some prefer these for personal care, especially for oily skins, as they form a creamy, rich lather and wash off completely without leaving any residue.
♥ Regarding the appearance of the soap - Please note ♥
These soaps are done in a true artisan way so they won't be perfectly square or may present some cosmetic defects. They already have a patina because of the long drying process. Because these are not milled, they will shrink with the curing process, as they loose some water content so their weight will be less than 300 gr. 600 gr. or 1 kilo. Some soaps may have a white film made of salt created during the drying process. This will go away after the first wash. In the pictures, you can see the difference between a "fresh" soap and one that is cured. The cured soap will always last longer than a fresh one.
I also have available:
