Whisky words: dunnage

Whisky words: dunnage

Dunnage is the traditional style of warehousing used in Scotland, with casks stored up to three high. It is also often referred to as a ‘traditional warehouse’.

When you visit distilleries in Scotland, these are normally the style of warehouses that you will see. In a romantic sense, these tactile environments are very attractive and capable of wooing whisky tourists and visitors.

A lot of distilleries, however, now mature most of their stock in racked or palletised warehouses offsite for cost-efficiency.
