CSI star George Eads has joined the cast of the new MacGyver TV reboot, but he won't play the lead.

The 49-year-old is the first actor to join the drama, which focuses on a young MacGyver working for a shadowy international agency, Deadline reports.

He will play Lincoln, a government employee with a passion for conspiracy theories.

Henry Winkler - who produced the original series - is on board for the CBS remake, which is being written by Paul Downs Colaizzo.

Furious 7's James Wan was due to direct the pilot, but had to leave the project due to scheduling conflicts. He's being replaced by David Von Ancken.

Richard Dean Anderson starred as US government fixer Angus MacGyver for nearly 140 episodes on ABC between 1985 and 1992.
