Corinne Day

Corinne Day

Corinne Day, research and documentary of the world she was part of. A broaden research of her as individual who is part of an era, culture, politics, etc. Placing Corinne within the timeline she worked and how it is effected her and/ or how she contributed to the wider picture, the era. Diary represents 10 years of her life of which she kept an intermittent photographic diary of friends, family, experiences and places she has been.

"Good friends make you face the truth about yourself and you do the same for them, as painful, or as pleasurable, as the truth may be."

Most of the photos are of her friends, though combining that and the sentence she added on the back of how your friends reflect the truth about yourself. Her illness is one of the main foundations of the diary idea and how it is presents to the viewers. The diary divided in different chapters. The diary is not set by canonical dates, places or other written or obvious signifiers, which can help the viewer to understand the whole picture. Corinne chose to put the illness chapter in the middle maybe as an experience that is not an outcome or handled by human hands as oppose to the other experiences in the diary such as partying, drug use, intimate relationships.

In the diary Corinne was photographed in hospitals in New York and London, before and after her surgery. Corinne asked from her boyfriend, Mark, to photograph her on those moments

“I needed pictures because I was so scared. It took my mind off it.”

Corinne Day has passed away age 45 in August 2010 after a few years battle with brain cancer. Her first brain tumor was discovered on 1996, there she went in a brain surgery to remove the tumor. In 2008 the brain tumor returned, after fighting the disease for two years Corinne died. Corinne Day's photographs influenced a generation of fashion and documentary image makers. Her pictures unflinchingly documented her life and relationships with a realist snapshot aesthetic-representing a youth culture.
