When Gaga Met Garbo in a Parking Lot

Prior to the opening of its first luxury hotel next May in Sweden, a Nordic hotel group has exported a mobile hotel room to Manhattan's West Village—with interiors inspired by Greta Garbo and Lady Gaga.

Wandering through the West Village this weekend? You might be surprised to stumble across a fully functional hotel room in a shipping container on the corner of Charles and Washington streets. You can tour the room by day through September 28—and one lucky New Yorker has been chosen to stay overnight, full Swedish breakfast included (as is the norm throughout Scandinavia).

Scandic Hotels hopes to encourage people to visit Stockholm in 2016, and stay at the Scandic Haymarket—scheduled to open on May 1. But why Garbo? The new hotel, at Hötorget in the heart of the city, was originally the PUB department store (opened in 1882 by Paul Urbanus Bergström) and was where Greta Garbo first worked as a shop girl in the early 1920s.

Committed to paying homage to the glamorous movie star, the hotel's designers also wanted to add a touch of modern whimsy. In their "Scandic 2 Go" room, and throughout the forthcoming hotel, you'll find retro-modern furniture, Pop art–styled flourishes, and bold graphics à la Lady Gaga.
