There’s no better way to soak in the loveliness of Paris in the spring than walking down the cherry blossom-flanked Promenade Plantée—the Parisian answer to New York’s High Line. The Promenade Plantée is French for ”tree-lined walkway,” and is an elevated linear park in Paris’s 12th arrondissement. It starts just a few steps away from Opéra Bastille and stretches almost three miles to Bois de Vincennes. Though it’s known as a Parisian High Line of sorts, the Promenade was actually built first, in 1993—and until 2010 was the only elevated urban park in the world. The Promenade Plantée is actually an old railway, following the now-defunct Vincennes Line. At its beginning, the park is elevated around ten meters high and features multiple arches. The walkway is flanked on both sides with cherry blossom trees, roses, and other greenery. Additionally, many parts of the Promenade boast expansive views; other parts such as the Viaduc des Arts feature shops selling local arts and crafts. The western portion of the parkway may be accessed via stairways and elevators leading up to the elevated viaduct, and is reserved strictly for pedestrians. The eastern portion of the parkway is open to both pedestrians and cyclists. Either way, the Promenade offers some much-needed peace and quiet in the middle of the city. Promenade Plantée is one of the best ways to soak in the gorgeous architecture that surrounds Paris. The walkway itself, and its stunning urban surroundings, make it the perfect movie location (including the beloved romantic comedy, Before Sunset, in 2004).
