The Green Lake

A bench is underwater in the Green Lake

Come marvel at this week’s picturesque #AustrianExplorer destination, the so-called Green Lake in Styria. Surrounded by lush forests and rugged mountains, this mystic lake almost disappears in the winter and emerges in springtime when mountain snow melts and feeds into the basin. Depending on the amount of snowfall in a given year, water levels can rise up to 32 feet and even flood adjacent trails and benches. The water is so pure and clear that it absorbs red light, thus rendering the lake’s surface emerald green.
