One woman got to the starting line just before 7 a.m. "Where is everyone," she asked KCBS Radio. "It's so weird because I'm a native, I've done this for years, it used to be so crazy down here."

Despite the chilly weather, about 20,000 runners participated in the goofy, spirited San Francisco footrace. Among the creative costumes, there were plenty of COVID-19 pandemic themes.

"We've got two teams. One's Pfizer, one's Moderna," one centipede runner explained, bringing some humor to the realities of coronavirus. "We're J&J" another team said, adding "we didn't race, we dropped out."

A third man laughed when explaining his outfit. "I'm running as sanitizing wipes," he said.

Centipedes are groups of 13 to 15 runners who travel together linked by a bungee cord, or any other safe mechanism. One of the largest centipedes was the Impala Racing Club. In 2019, they ran as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, this time around, Cruella de Vil forced 42 of her Dalmatians to run.
