Description

This robust houseplant is more commonly known as Sansevieria trifasciata, but the Sansevierias have turned out as a group within the dragon trees (Dracaena). Unlike typical Dracaenas, however, they do not form a trunk above the ground, but a creeping underground rootstock. They are also called bowstring hemp because the leaf fibres of one species were used to make bowstrings in southern Africa. Dracaena trifasciata is native to West and Central Africa and grows in forests and bushes as well as in fully sunny areas. It tolerates shade, dryness and warmth - ideal conditions for an indoor plant. With its water-retaining, firm leaves, it is a succulent. There are many ornamental cultivars of this species, large forms grow up to 1,60 m tall, but the variety 'Hahnii' has particularly short, broad leaves, it grows about 15-20 cm tall.

Bird's nest snake plant grows in pretty much any soil that is kept reasonably moist, it tolerates dry periods but not waterlogging. When it is well established, you can feed it with a houseplant fertiliser. The light requirement is low, but a bright position leads to stronger growth; strong lighting or sun is also tolerated. The plant is very temperature tolerant, but should not be kept below 15 °C for a long time. Sansevieria spreads with its runner-like rootstocks. It is propagated by cutting off the stolons and also by partial leaf cuttings in sandy substrate.

Dracaena trifasciata 'Hahnii' is one of the most robust, versatile tropical ground plants. It can be used for rainforest or humid forest terrariums as well as for dry terrarium types, with plenty as well as little light.
