Wonderful, Faithful Adaptation of Robin Hood Tales...
4 Stars
Wonderful, Faithful Adaptation of Robin Hood Tales...
Walt Disney's modest 1952 production, "Story of Robin Hood", is often overlooked, sandwiched between Errol Flynn's lavish 1938 Technicolor masterpiece, and Kevin Costner's even bigger-budgeted 1991 blockbuster, and that is truly a shame...in many ways, it is the most accurate and unpretentious retelling of the legends surrounding the Bandit of Sherwood and his Merrie Men, and is marvellous entertainment, to boot! The screenplay, by Lawrence Edward Watkin, builds upon the legends that suggested Robin was not a Saxon nobleman, but a simple yeoman (the same decision Ridley Scott made, in Russell Crowe's 2010 "Robin Hood"). In the service of the Earl of Huntington, as an archer/groundskeeper, with his father, young Robin Fitzooth (winningly portrayed by Richard Todd), shares a first love with Huntington's daughter, Marion (cute, tomboyish Joan Rice), and a fierce family loyalty to King Richard, absent on his Crusade. But when Huntington leaves to join the King, and Marion goes to London as a ward of Queen Mother Eleanor (the regal Martita Hunt), the devious Sheriff of Nottingham (future Oscar winner, Peter Finch) murders the elder Fitzooth, and Robin vows vengeance, beginning his fabled career in Sherwood Forest. Many classic events are recreated (the quarterstaff first encounter with Little John, perfectly portrayed by one of my favorite actors, James Robertson Justice; the river 'ride' on the ample shoulders of James Hayter, as Friar Tuck), with the troubadour, Allan-a-Dale (Elton Hayes) providing a pleasant tuneful accompaniment. While Hubert Gregg lacks Claude Rains' fey panache, as Prince John, the court intrigues of the 1938 film aren't really the focus, here; even the return of King Richard (Patrick Barr) is more important as a means to reward Robin with a 'Title', and Marion, than to dispense royal justice against John (who, historically, gets the Crown within a handful of years, anyway!) Director Ken Annakin keeps the tone light, and the characters, family-friendly...which you would expect from a Disney film, whether live-action or animated! If you've never seen this version of "Robin Hood", I invite you to check it out...it's a lot of fun!

I was delighted to find this movie; I had seen it as a kid in the mid-1950s, and even had the Disney "stamp/story book" to add to my comic book collection. It stars Richard Todd and a rich cast beautifully photographed, and is excellent family entertainment. I have truly enjoyed seeing this again, for it brought back fond memories of my childhood.

Fun fact Disney had a live action Robin Hood movie long before they had an animated one. The Story of Robin Hood (1952) was released in theaters on June 26, 1952. Later on it would be shown on tv on The Wonderful World of Disney. I watched it last night. I'm not going to compare it to more famous live action versions. I thought it was a fun Robin Hood movie. lots of action and fun moments. Richard Todd plays a young Robin who becomes outlaw and with his band defies the Sheriff and Prince John. I was pleased to see Martita Hunt as Queen Eleanor, recognizing her from one of my fav Hammer movies, Brides of Dracula. Joan Rice plays a charming Maid Marian. I am glad they adapt the ballad where she poses as a page in order to join the Merry Men. Hubert Gregg plays Prince John a role he would reprise twice on the tv series Adventures of Robin Hood in 1957. Michael Horden even shows up as Scathelock here a peasant abused by the Sheriff. As with some movies this is a separate character then Will Scarlett, in this movie played by Anthony Forwood. Although it is often that the former is a different spelling of Scarlett. to play the evil Sheriff is Peter Finch! who more then fills the role, having a man who poached a deer, strung up wearing a deer hide while men beat him. Later Robin has him as a guest and takes money from him to pay for each wrong doing. This movie does have the common legends of meeting Little John and Friar Tuck. As well as defending the land while Richard is off on Crusade and forgiven by him at the end. The only connection I see to the later animated Disney Robin Hood (1973) movie is there is a shared scene of Robin escaping over a drawbridge and swimming across the moat while guards shoot at him. only in this live action movie Robin does get wounded. Also the Sheriff who is chasing after him gets caught between the wall and draw bridge. implying but not showing that the Sheriff meets a sticky end. clearly someone on the 73 animated movie liked this scene a lot to copy it only there Robin is not shot and wounded and he and his band mock the Prince. All in all I think The Story of Robin Hood is a fun movie! well worth viewing if you like Robin Hood movies and swashbuckling movies.

While the Errol Flynn version is the definitive Robin Hood film, this early 1950s version from Disney is a neglected gem that stands on its own merits. It wisely takes a different approach, in that we meet Robin as a carefree young man before becoming an outlaw, already knowing a feisty & saucy Maid Marian from childhood. We also meet his father, obviously much-loved & a solid influence on his son. Their relationship is warm & sturdy, the sort that any young man would want with his father. Equally interesting is the inclusion of the famed Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine in the story, taking Marian under her wing as a maid-in-waiting.

But in a swashbuckler, the story ultimately depends on having a truly dastardly villain. And in Peter Finch's Sherriff of Nottingham, this film has one! His matter-of-factness makes him all the more dangerous & threatening, clearly not a man to be crossed as he connives with Prince John. Some of the punishments he devises for outlaws are surprisingly grim for a family film — never too gory, but striking enough to emphasize the casual cruelty of the man.

Richard Todd is quite good as the young Robin, with the mischievous streak of a good-hearted trickster, but also noble & determined enough to inspire his band of followers & to defy the injustice of both the Sherriff & Prince John. His scenes with Joan Rice's Marian are charming, demonstrating their longtime affection & respect for each other. That they fall deeply in love is utterly convincing, as they've always been fond of each other since childhood.

As previous reviewers have noted, the film opts for the idealized Middle Ages, with just enough grime around the edges to satisfy the more literal-minded. In a story like this, the castles should be pristine, the banners ablaze with color, and the landscapes drenched in richer-than-life greens & golds & sprays of wildflowers. The film looks great & moves with a brisk, exciting pace — highly recommended & not to be missed!

4.0 out of 5 stars Una versione molto umana della leggenda del folklore inglese

As a collector of books and films relating to Robin Hood I have got to say that this is absolutely one of my favourites. I first viewed this classic Disney film at the cinema as a child when it was first released in the UK and for me this film still holds the same charm after nearly sixty years. Richard Todd is up there in the top three Robin Hood players with Errol Flynn and Richard Greene, and the incomparable Peter Finch is suavely evil as the Sheriff of Nottingham and the all British supporting cast make for the right level of drama and humour in what is essentially a telling of the Robin Hood story suitable for the whole family.
I had been trying to upgrade my old VHS copy for some years but this excellent little film was not released on DVD until 2009 and then only as a region 1 NTSC version, if you have a multi-region player then the DVD is far superior quality to the original UK release VHS.
