A closer look to the tijuanense alternative rock band and their different musical influences

A few weeks ago I was invited to see a band from Tijuana play at this club in Downey.  My colleagues assured that this band was going to knock my socks off, so I purposely did not listen to their music just because I wanted to experience, firsthand, what they really meant.

They weren’t joking. Once the band strapped on their guitars and got behind the drum kit, they turned into a musical hurricane with amazing stage presence, pulsating drumbeats and bass notes, razor sharp guitar chords and mesmerizing solos. This band turned out to be TreVolts and they indeed knock my socks off.

With a combination of classic rock, the sensibility of the 70’s pop, hints of new wave and classic Spanish rock, TreVolts have created their own soulful and powerful sound. There’s no denying that they’ve become one of the most innovative and interesting bands from Tijuana! Unmatchable in their circles, this band has earned the right to open for Caifanes this coming April in Tijuana.

Luckily after the show, I had the chance to talk to the new Tijuana rock band and here is a peek into our conversation:

Al Borde (AB) – How did you come up with the name TreVolts?

TreVolts – The name was sort of an accident, originally we were going to name the band “Trebol” but the name had already been registered, so we had to come up with something else. Since at that time we were a trio, we thought of the French phrase “tres volts” which means “three volts”, so we combined it into “TreVolts”. Now for the official version, since we were a trio, we also wanted to give the name some kick or energy, thus “TreVolts”.

AB – How long have you been together as a band, since you guys seem very tight on stage?

TreVolts – We began about four years ago, but we took a year off and got back together about a year ago, but with renewed energy and with a much more mature and serious attitude. That’s when things started happening.

AB- From the very first song you played, I could hear different musical influences, but at the same time it sounds very unique, what are your influences?

TreVolts – We all have different influences, some of us like classic rock, but we also like metal and some pop. We like artists like Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Queen, Led Zeppelin and many more, including classic Spanish rock like Soda Stereo and even 70’s pop like Camilo Sesto. Also, we listen to different musical styles like rockabilly and country.

AB- Now that you have played in L.A. a couple of times, how do you find L.A. audiences?

TreVolts – We really enjoy playing here, it appears that the audience is much more appreciative and they actually pay attention to the band on stage.

AB – Do you have plans for an album anytime soon?

TreVolts – Yes, the album is ready, we are just working out the details with a record company in Mexico City and we are hoping to release it by April or June at the latest. We are also working on finding a distribution deal for the U.S., but for now, it will be available on I-tunes.

TreVolts will be back to play in L.A. on Thursday March 26th, as they will be part of the concert being headlined by Mexican independent rock icons, La Barranca, at Los Globos in Silver Lake.  You can follow TreVolts on Facebook, Youtube and Soundcloud.
