This model is available in one Prime Army, Dark Host. It can also be used in the Unlimited game mode. You can view the other Mk3 models that made it into a Legacy Army at this page.

Note that the rest of this page is about the model's Mark III rules.

Scrap thralls are made by Necrotechs from heaps of bone and metal taken from corpses and destroyed 'jacks. Once animated, these thralls shamble forth as delivery vehicles for necrotite-enhanced bombs.

  • Death Burst (★ Attack) - This model makes a melee attack. (HIT) If that attack hits, instead of dealing damage normally, center a 4" AOE on the model hit and RFP this model. The model hit suffers an POW 16 damage roll. (MISS) If the attack misses, center the AOE on this model and RFP this model. (BLAST) Other than the model directly hit, models in the AOE are hit and suffer an unboostable POW 8 blast damage roll. Detonation damage is unboostable.

Thoughts on Scrap Thrall

Scrap Thrall in a Nutshell

Scrap Thralls are a very cheap option. They are one of the cheapest models in the game and this shows in their stats & abilities (or lack thereof). But if you need some cheap troops to cast spells on, or just like the idea of exploding troops, or a cheap option to block charge lanes, Scrap Thralls are your men.

Combos & Synergies

Being the extremely cheap units, this actually makess them useful to a number of caster who sacrifice their own troops.

  • Necrotechs can make new ones.
  • You can use them as Sacrificial Pawns for Terminus.
  • They can be used as targeting beacons for AoE spells and attacks against units who otherwise cannot be hit.
  • Fuel for Goreshade2's feat.
  • Fuel for Mortenebra1's Sacrificial Lamb spell.
  • Fuel for Skarre1's Ritual Sacrifice spell.
  • The Strange Bedfellows theme lets them get up the board quickly.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • You can't leave them too close to your own lines, because they'll get exploded by enemy ranged attacks And Cryx infantry generally don't have enough ARM to survive random explosions.
  • You can't leave them too close to each other, because they'll daisy chain with the explosion of one causing others to explode (unless that was your plan).
  • They're great against enemy low-ARM infantry, but typically such enemy infantry has enough SPD to simply avoid Scrappies.
  • You can't use Death Burst on a free strike or with Swift Vengeance

Tricks & Tips

  • Run Scrap Thralls into the enemy, then shoot them in the back.
    • Set up a daisy chain, so that one exploding will set the next off.
    • Shoot them with Bloat Thralls, for even more AOE fun.
    • Shoot them with AOE spells while they stand next to Spell Warded targets.

Trivia

  • Released way back in Warmachine: Prime (2003).
  • The models can be bought as either 3 Scrap Thralls in a single pack, or 1 Scrap Thrall plus 1 Necrotech.

Rules Clarifications

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Detonation and/or Death Burst     (Edit)

  • The Servitor / Scrap Thrall is on the table for the attack roll, but it is removed before the damage roll. So stuff that affects a model's damage roll (like Positive Charge) won't apply to the damage. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Damage is never boosted, even if the model charged before making the melee attack.
  • Not considered an attack & "Non-attack damage roll" (Edit)   [Show/Hide]
    • There are two ways you can get these "non-attack" damage rolls.
      • Type 1 - A secondary damage roll that is not considered to be an attack. Some attacks create a second damage roll that is explicitly "not considered an attack" (such as Electro Leap).
(Note that although the secondary damage roll is not an attack, the original attack certainly is and will trigger stuff normally. These clarifications don't apply to the original attack.)
      • Type 2 - A damage roll that's not from an attack. Some special abilities & special actions tell you to make a damage roll without mentioning whether it is considered an attack or not (such as Vent Steam and Flak Field).
    • When it comes to other abilities that trigger on damage (such as Vengeance) both types function the same way. For brevity we'll refer to both as "Pure Damage".

    • Pure damage is not an attack, so doesn't trigger stuff like Vengeance.
    • Pure damage is not an attack, so doesn't benefit from stuff that affects 'attack damage rolls' (such as Bethayne1's feat). (Infernal Ruling)
    • Pure damage (normally) doesn't actually hit the model(s) it damages, so doesn't trigger stuff like Shock Field. (A few of them do specify they hit, though, like Warhead.)
    • Pure damage is not from an attack, but it is (normally) damage from the original model. This has two implications:
      1. It's not an attack from a weapon so:
        • it won't gain damage buffs from the weapon (such as Poison).
        • it won't gain any Damage Types from the weapon. (Infernal Ruling)
      2. It is a damage roll from a model so:
    • Exception: Some damage is not from an attack and not from a model (for example, Collateral damage). In this case, you should reverse the stuff listed under #2 above.
