The popularity of this ’90s punk hairstyle is rising, as more and more women are experimenting by shaving a part of their head
Till a few years ago, the undercut was a hairstyle associated with punk fans, metal heads or rebellious teenagers. But since then, this unconventional hairstyle has gone mainstream, with even women experimenting with it, in its different forms. Celebrity hair expert Aalim Hakim says that because of its uniqueness, versatility and the fact that it blends well with both long and short hair, many celebrities like Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Scarlett Johansson, Natasha Dormer and Kiran Rao have been seen wearing the undercut.
Hairstylist Vipul Bhagat explains the cut, “These are technically haircuts, which are cut very short and mostly shaven from either one or both the temple areas to create a patterned hairstyle with asymmetric shape. They are classified as extreme hairstyles that gives the person who carries it a distinct personality.”
The variations of the trend
Depending on your face shape and length there are a lot of variations that can be tried. There is long, short, mohawk, clean shaven and pixie. They can be matched with bright colours like red, burgundy and purple for a more dramatic look. Says hairstylist Asgar Saboo, “Today, most of the undercut hairstyles are feminine with longer coifed hair softening the shaved area. You can create multiple identities for both work and play.”
Find the right cut for you
- If you’re looking for something subtle, go for a 4-6mm undercut at the nape of your neck instead of the side of your head. The former are much easier to grow than ones that are on either side of the head and will only be revealed when you wear an updo.
- If you have it on the sides, it looks great but will be noticeable most of the time.
