Prosecutor says defence statement "not criminal"

A chief prosecutor says there is no reason to think Sverker Göransson, the Armed Forces Supreme Commander, committed a crime when he said Sweden could only protect itself for one week.

Göransson's statement in the beginning of January was met with surprise and anger.

Prosecutors then began to investigate whether Göransson's comments constituted a crime against national security.

But Chief prosecutor Tomas Lindstrand says he has spoken to the Swedish Intelligence Service and attorneys in the Armed Forces and has come to the conclusion that no crime was committed. No preliminary investigation will be launched.

Since his statements, Göransson has gone on sick leave for exhaustion. He is expected to return to the position in March.
