Sweden’s New Supreme Commander

The new Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces will be Sverker Göranson. The Swedish government announced their choice at midday on Friday.

Göranson started his career over 30 years ago was made Lieutenant General in 2007. He served in the Nordic battalion of the in the UN Protection Force in Bosnia during the war and has also worked as a defence attaché at the Swedish embassy in Washington.

“I have accepted the position with a strong sense of humility. The task of continuing to lead the Swedish Armed Forces into the future is one which carries great responsibility,” Göranson wrote in a statement on the Army’s homepage.  

Sverker Göranson will pick up the reins from current Supreme Commander Håkan Syrén at the end of March.
