Creating folders

Create folders by pressing the Add a Folder button  Icon on button to add a folder in Journal  on the Home Screen of Microsoft Journal. You will be given the opportunity to name the folder and choose a color.

Screen capture of the create a folder dialog

Journal only allows one level of folders. You can create a folder when you are at the top level of the home screen. You cannot create any folders inside another folder.

Moving journals to a folder

You can move a journal to a folder in these ways:

  • Press and hold on top of a journal on the Home Screen until it shrinks. Then drag it on top of the destination folder and release.

  • Press the 3 dots  Icon used to show there is a details menu on an item in Journal in the upper right corner of a journal on the Home Screen to access the Journal Menu. Then select the Move To option to see a list of the most recent folders you have accessed.

    • Select a folder from the list and the journal will be moved there.

    • Select New Folder... and you will be prompted to create a new folder for the journal.

Tap the folder to open it and see the journal you just moved.

Duplicate journal names

You cannot move a journal to a folder that contains a journal with the same name.

If you attempt this, you will see an error dialog. Tapping Keep Both will change the name of the journal you are dragging to indicate its a copy and place in the destination folder. Pressing cancel will end the operation without any changes.

You can also rename one of the journals using the Customize... option in the Journal Menu.

Removing journals from a folder

You can remove a journal from a folder by pressing the 3 dots  Icon used to show there is a details menu on an item in Journal in the upper right corner of a journal to access the Journal Menu. Then select the Move To option to see a list of the most recent folders you have accessed.

To move a journal outside of the folder and back to the top level, select Journals (home screen). The journal will be moved to the Home Screen.

Deleting Folders

Tap the 3 dots  Icon used to show there is a details menu on an item in Journal in the upper right corner of a folder to access the Folder Menu. Then select Delete Folder.

You will be prevented from deleting folders that contain journals or other files. Please empty the folder first and then try deleting it again.

If you navigate into a folder in Journal and it appears to be empty but you cannot delete it, then its likely that a file that with an extension that does not belong to Journal is in the folder in the file system. You will have to use File Explorer to resolve the situation.

Journal folders, File Explorer, and the file system

Journal stores your journals on the file system under a folder named Journals in your Documents library.

When you create a folder in Journal, it will create a folder in the file system in the Journals folder.

You can easily navigate to the location of a folder in File Explorer by tapping the 3 dots  Icon used to show there is a details menu on an item in Journal in the upper right corner of a folder to access the Folder Menu. Then select Show In Explorer.
