CGI  image of tapeworm diverticulitis.  The adult tapeworm has a head, a short neck, and a segmented body formed of proglottids. Tapeworms anchor themselves to the inside of the intestine of their host using their head, which typically has hooks, suckers, or both. Tapeworm diverticulitis is a condition in which a tapeworm infection causes inflammation of the diverticula (small pouch-like bulges) in the wall of the intestine. This condition is relatively rare and is typically caused by infection with the tapeworm species Taenia saginata or Taenia solium. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and weight loss. Treatment typically involves administering medication to kill the tapeworm and managing any inflammation or infection in the diverticula. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the affected portion of the intestine.
