Style Spotlight: Mary-Kate Olsen

Happy rainy Thursday! Well, or not. But maybe you’re lucky and are finding yourself in a sun-soaked destination of dreams … But either way, what better way to get you through to Friday than with a good dose of street-style from one of the most trend-setting fashionistas around? I have a serious love for some Mary-Kate … and noooo not just because she also plays in the under 5’3 club and has blonde wavy hair. But because Mary-Kate has always dressed to the beat of her own style drum. Okay maybe not always, but ever since she was allowed! You know, after graduating from being force-dressed identical to Ashley for the sake of all those wildly entertaining twin movies. Which, I still kind of love.

But anyways, since being a free-bird style-wise, Mary-Kate has never been one to play tag-along with the trends. When the world is doing one thing, she does another. And I will always admire her for pioneering the boho-hobo-layered-explosion-chic fandango that she always got SO much flak for. Now I’m not going to lie, I guarantee I am going to re-visit this style spotlight at a later date, because there are WAY too many looks that need proper attention, but for today I have a select few street-style pics that really blow my top. Hope you enjoy!

Style Queen Mary-Kate

Layered Explosions

I think I may have a near fatal attraction to that little jacket … it’s like a high-fashion kaleidoscope or something! But either way, here is a prime example of Mary-Kate’s grunged-up glammed-out-layering skills. Amongst a sea of scarf action, messy hair, and a lot of black layers, is a look that very few could pull off. It may not be your cup of fashion tea, but it works for her! And that’s sort of what style is about … I think anyways. And besides all that, it set the stage for a bevy of runway trends.

Okay, so I am clearrrrly obsessed with this. But aside from my personal bias, we have a look that can be used as a serious style lesson! Mary-Kate combines leather pants with a super-long (cotton?) jacket of some kind with a cropped fur coat on top. Plus of course, messy-hair, chic boots, a fab bag, and giant sunnies. But the mixing of lengths, textures, and glam vs. non-glam pieces is something to take note of. Play around with varying lengths … mix grunge with chic! Balance super polished pieces with undone hair, or edgier accessories. That’s the lesson I take from this.

Alright, so I understand the initial reaction to this may be whaaaaa the …. SMAAAACK?! But love it, or hate it … she kick-started some major style trends with this. I see her look here as the sort of over-the-top “runway” version of what most people’s real-life dressing would be. I love her fearless approach to the uniform of a day-to-day look I covet. Wide leg bell bottoms, a long tunic and giant sweater? It’s kind of a daily style dream. And love it or leave it, girl was rocking this way before it became a mainstream trend.

Streamlined and Chic

And just as easily as she throws on 300 layes, Mary-Kate takes things to a whole new level of sophisticated but edgy glamor. I love this entire look, but especially love the fact that she’s able to grunge things up with ripped tights while maintaining a stunning and chic look. A prime example of how the subtle inclusion of contrasting styles can come together to create nothing short of may-jor. Oh and the bag … I can’t even talk about. Out. Of. Con.Trol.

Am I the only one who wishes I could live in this? This look is the epitome of luxe, but given an effortless vibe with a few subtle details. Mary-Kate’s open-toe platforms with tights, knit beanie and funky sunnies take the look from shooting way off the glam Richter and balance it out with a bit of a downtown feel. Sensing a pattern yet? Mix and match people!

I love the classic elegence of the fitted black dress and tailored cardi. The lady-like pumps keep the look together, but Mary-Kate’s trademark beachy-waves give this more classic look a carefree infusion. Sometimes something as simple as one’s hairstyle can truly alter what an outfit is saying. Next time you feel like something’s not quite right, play around with the small details … it may just be the key to your styling qualm!

An Evening Affair

J’adore this! Mary-Kate manages to keep her signature laid-back style and translate it perfectly into an evening look. The low-slung belt adds a vintage silhouette to this and gives things an extra ounce of casualosity. The loose but well placed draping mixes in both a bohemian and a refined quality for the best of both worlds. Plus her soft waves are the perfect bonus feature to bring the whole look together.

Um, party dress perfection! So obsessed with this glittery striped explosion. It’s not shocking this is from the Olsen’s own Elizabeth and James line, as it kind of looks made for her. The sheath-style mini, messy waves and smokey makeup come together as a carefree party-girl look, but the sparkles work in the evening glam appeal, proving it doesn’t take too much extra to translate one’s daywear preferences to the eve.

And for our final piece de whatsit, we have a personal fav. A red carpet bohemian dream queen! The floating layers and goddess-like silhouette make this an etherial evening piece, while the layers of necklaces and fringed suede bag bring in a slightly hippie-feel. Which, I mean … kind of amazing.

What I realized in putting together Mary-Kate’s evening looks is that so often with red-carpet appearances, I feel like celebrities can look over-styled into something that no longer reflects their own style. Mary-Kate always manages to create a super-glammed up evening look that remains true to her style roots, something I both admire and hope to see more of in other starlets! Also something that can be a lesson to us all. No matter what the occasion … work, play, red carpet appearances … there’s always a way to let your true style shine through. It’s all about being a little creative and playing around with some extra details here and there. Style trickery … yet again.

Well my friends, that’s all for now! Hope you enjoyed this ride on the Mary-Kate style train! Let me know your thoughts! Stay glam&keep it real,

xxMegan West

PS. I don’t even know what “keep it real” was supposed to mean …

PS Again. Who’s your style crush? Someone you want me to obsess over? Let me know! meganwest@pointytoeshoecrew.com & I just may feature her! Or him.

Wow I actually really like some of her evening looks… and I guess she started some trends with it, but some of those actually look like she fell into a laundry bin and emerged with pieces of cloth randomly stuck to her body. Great article! I loved those twin hijinks movies!

The boots she is wearing with that burgundy fur coat, are very similar to the Report Signature Columbus boots. Layering is definitely a great technique but can be hard to master – you should definitely do a segment on “how to” layer. 🙂 The evening affair look – wish I could pull it off!!

    • Thanks for the comments, Rubina! That boot tip would make a great steal vs splurge column. And a Styling Segment on layering is a super good idea …. future photoshoot idea perhaps! xxMegan
